Many people suffer overwhelming experiences. Sometimes the simple act of talking about what happened is, at first, beyond verbal language. In these cases, a trained therapist may use visualizing materials, such as plain paper and magic markers. Through these methods, a safe avenue for expression can be provided. This may be an opportunity to find a “voice” for inner experience, prior to being able to actually “speak” about it. As can be seen here, the work can have an eerie, strange feel to it. Trained and experienced practitioners utilize these techniques only after safety skills have been taught. Gradually, things become clearer.
